The European regulatory framework on air quality is undergoing significant transformation. For companies managing industrial filtration systems, these are not merely formal updates: they represent concrete operational requirements, with defined deadlines and direct implications for technology decisions.
The new European Air Quality Directive entered into force on 10 December 2024 and must be transposed into national legislation by 2026. The new limit values are considerably more stringent than previous standards: for fine particulate matter PM2.5 — responsible for the highest number of premature deaths in Europe — the annual limit value will be reduced from 25 µg/m³ to 10 µg/m³, with the goal of progressively approaching the WHO guideline value of 5 µg/m³. These new limits must be met by 1 January 2030.
For many industrial plants, current emission levels are not compatible with these new standards. Companies and industries will be required to play a significant role, adopting cleaner technologies, reducing emissions and complying with stricter standards and more frequent controls.
On the topic of air quality in production environments, UNI 11976, ratified in April 2025, defines precise methodologies for monitoring pollutants in confined environments, introducing for the first time the requirement to track parameters such as VOCs, fine dust, CO₂ and biological agents on a continuous and documented basis.
The standard introduces an integrated approach encompassing extraction, filtration and general ventilation, rewarding technological solutions capable of maintaining clean air in a consistent and measurable way.
Taken together, these regulatory updates push in the same direction: from periodic verification to continuous monitoring. It is no longer sufficient to demonstrate that a plant is compliant at the time of commissioning — it must remain so over time, in a documented and verifiable way.
This has direct implications for the choice of filtration systems, their maintenance protocols and, increasingly, the ability to integrate real-time monitoring tools.
